The Unix Philosophy or The Nine Programming Commandments
Image by Rudolph Schuba via Flickr |
Developers know programming languages become obsolete with time. Say you learn to code in one language today, a few years down the road that language might be extinct or really antiquated. Recently a friend of mine who is a developer told me about the Unix Philosophy.
New Amazing Lionel Messi Video Created with Unusual Video Editing Tool
Gotcha! It's not a video editing tool at all. Remember those days back in school making flipbooks while the teacher babbled away?
And how about Goku vs Superman?

Wevideo : Way better than MovieMaker
I've been testing Wevideo and so far so good. This online video editing website offers you two options depending on how experienced you're editing video. I've been using the advanced option, Timeline. I've found that it's far superior to Windows MovieMaker when it comes to video, image and sound editing. The only downside is probably the fact you only have 15 minutes of "export time". After that I imagine you have to switch to their premium version.
You can try other online video editing tools.

Windows 8
Geeks are excited about the arrival of the new baby. NOOOO, not that one!! Congrats to Prince William and his wife though. Actually we're talking about Windows 8. I've been talking to some experts and the verdict is simple : Windows 8 is a lot of trouble and comes with a lot of bugs.

Maybe it is wise to wait a little bit until when a more long term version of Windows 8 appears.

Is Niwie Pixel the most popular Youtube Linux Geek ? : She knows her stuff. And she shows her stuff too.
Nixie Pixel knows her stuff : computers, software and games. If you are into Linux and open source stuff, she can be fun to watch. She has a serious number of fans who are not shy to tell how they feel about Linux or her. I think she capitalises her "assets" in order to attract more visitors/followers.

Linux's best OS : Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Mint 15 Olivia
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is a long-term version that was created for extended support. It looks more like an OS x while Mint is a little bit more like Windows.
According to some experts, Mint15 is the outstanding OS of its generation. Then it's a no-brainer, you might say. Except that, Mint15 is based on Ubuntu and it suffers from the nine month support cycle that Ubuntu offers to all its releases(it used to be 18 months before). Ubuntu can be upgraded at the end of the cycle, unfortunately Mint doesn't have an update option. Your only option to upgrade would be a re-installation. So, after nine months Mint won't be getting any more security updates.

Photoshop or Gimp use too much memory? Try Pixlr in its three flavors.
Pixlr.com
Photoshop and Gimp are much more complete, but if you're not a professional photographer, Pixlr should more than fulfill your needs. Best of all, you don't have to install, download anything. It's in the "cloud." A little bit like Picmonkey, but much more complete.
It's three flavors are:
Editor(advanced), Expressed(efficient), Pixlr-o-Matic(playful).

Shields Up : Security System Test
Shields Up is an online port scanning service created by Steve Gibson of Gibson Research Corporation and hosted at grc.com. The purpose of this utility is to alert the users of any ports that have been opened through their firewalls or through their NAT routers. The utility can scan the most common file sharing ports, as well as all service ports (1-1056), and user defined ports, in sets of 64. The scanning servers have the static IP addresses of 4.79.142.192 to 4.79.142.207.

Back Track
http://www.backtrack-linux.org/
This tool is not really for IT-rookies.
Wikipedia - BackTrack is a distribution based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution aimed at digital forensics and penetration testing use.[4] It is named after backtracking, a search algorithm. The current version is BackTrack 5 R3.,[5] now based on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) LTS, which is itself based on Debian.

Can't get rid of the Babylon Search toolbar? Try Adwcleaner by Xplode.
AdwCleaner by Xplode is a program that searches for and deletes Adware, Toolbars, Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), and browser Hijackers from your computer.
Recently I was trying to remove a toolbar called Babylon Search from a friend's computer. I used several known programs, but to no avail. Adwcleaner was impressively efficient and I liked the little bug. I recommend it.
Bleepingcomputer.com in a review about this program says : The types of programs that AdwCleaner targets are typically bundled with free programs that you download from the web. In many cases when you download and install a program, the install will state that these programs will be installed along with the program you downloaded. Unless you perform a Custom install, these unwanted programs will automatically be installed on your computer leaving you with extra browser toolbars, adware, and other unwanted programs. AdwCleaner is designed to search for and remove these types of programs.
